L. Ron Hubbard’s Stories from The Golden Age

by Derwood Hunsdale-Talbot on September 12, 2008

Just sitting around my living room enjoying some egg rolls for dinner, when suddenly I am punched in the face by a television commercial for what I thought was Choose Your Own Adventure books coming back to life. Remember those? Where you’d decide what the characters would do and turn to different pages of the “story” to determine their fate?  I used to read through both scenarios and then choose from there. Yes, it’s cheating.

Anyway, as I was saying, what I thought would be the awesome return of Choose Your Own Adventure is instead an affront to my intelligence.  It was a commercial for L. Ron Hubbard’s collection of “Stories from the Golden Age” novels. The Golden Age was from the 1930’s to the late 1940’s and most often associated with comic books.  This age saw the emergence of Superman, Batman, The Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Human Torch and Captain America. Great era!

Unfortunately what we have here now is a bizarre attempt at reviving the stories written by L. Ron Hubbard in the 1930’s and 40’s. The commercial is packed with promises of adventure, pirates and mystery, which is all good and it’s great to encourage kids to read and all, but doesn’t this whole re-emergence make you just a little suspicious? Like there might be some sort of ulterior motive?

The re-release of all these novels is scheduled from July of 2008 until the end of 2014, one new book each month. I couldn’t find a video online of this new commercial, but if you happen to come across it you’ll see what I’m talking about!
